After two airlines announced this summer they will pull their service from the airport before year's end, US Airways announced this week it will expand service on its Phoenix flights by bringing in larger planes.
Meanwhile, other airlines are looking to establish service at the local flight hub, possibly including companies that don't currently serve the airport, said Mike Manchak, a local business leader and member of the San Luis Obispo County Air Transportation Alliance.
That group formed last month, in the wake of the departures, to bolster service to the airport.
Manchak declined to give the names of airlines that could come to San Luis Obispo, noting it's too early in the planning process.
"Basically, we're looking for service (with connections) throughout the region--as far as Denver and Seattle, for example," he said.
Airlines have been cutting services nationally because of high fuel prices and fewer passengers.
The Phoenix-based US Airways saw an opportunity to fill a gap in local air service that will soon be left by American Eagle and Delta, said US Airways spokeswoman Valerie Wunder.
In June, the two airlines announced they will leave the airport. American Eagle will cancel its four daily flights to and from Los Angeles on Nov. 1, and Delta Connection will drop its sole remaining flight to Salt Lake City by Monday.
US Airways plans to replace its two 50-seater jets with larger 90-seat crafts--one in October and the second in November, Wunder said.
The two trips would increase the airport's departure capacity by 80 seats per day, which helps make up for some of the flights lost in the June announcements.
The Delta and American Eagle withdrawals mean 178 fewer passengers a day at the local airport--a 33 percent reduction of the facility's total service, Manchak said. However, the addition of US Airways' larger planes brings that figure up to a 17 percent reduction.
"So that's really good news," he said.
US Airways' announcement came about a month after it, too, decided to cut flights from the San Luis Obispo airport. Its flight to and from Las Vegas stopped Aug. 18.
The Vegas cut isn't included in the airport's total seat reduction figures because the flight was sporadic and didn't always stay true to its one-flight-per-day, five-days-per-week schedule, Manchak said.
The decision to stop the Vegas route, along with several other nationwide deductions to help improve profits, helped US Airways to expand Phoenix service in San Luis Obispo, Wunder said. However, the two actions were separate decisions, she said.
The Delta and American Eagle withdrawals will put about 100 people out of work and cause five daily flights to disappear.
It's not known if additional jobs will come to the airport with US Airways' larger planes, Wunder said.
"It is still two flights a day, so the workload will remain mostly the same," she said.
