More importantly, the strapping chestnut colt demonstrated what a fast learner he is proving to be.
An awkward start and less than comfortable position throughout did not deter Backtalk from running down Flatter Than Me in the deep stretch to claim the Grade III Bashford Manor Stakes for 2-year-olds by a length in his second career outing.
For all the slight bumbles Backtalk incurred Friday, a lesser contender might not have been so keen to shrug off the adversity.
After stumbling at the start and racing just behind the leaders in midpack, the son of Smarty Jones had to bully his way in between Flatter Than Me and Grand Slam Andre in the stretch, turning almost sideways at one point before kicking home under jockey Miguel Mena to cover the distance in 1:11.08.
"I was a little worried because he was running green. He was between horses and didn't really like it so he was sideways a bit," said Mena, who also guided the colt to his maiden win at Churchill on June 11. "But when I asked him for run he gave it to me. He's such a brave horse and he's going to keep learning and he has a really good future."
A half brother to graded stakes winner Bsharpsonata, the well-built Backtalk demonstrated similar mettle in his career debut when he circled the field five-wide to win the 5-furlong test by 23/4 lengths.
While trainer Tom Amoss was confident the colt had the ability to make the step up in company, he was pleasantly surprised to see as much resiliency as he witnessed Friday.
"Quite frankly, around the turn I wasn't so sure he was into it, and a lot of that is education," said Amoss, who added it had not been decided where the colt would make his next start. "When he got out of tight quarters and was in the clear outside of horses, you saw him spurt and that's a real positive sign for the future.
"This was a great learning experience for him and it will move him forward."
Backtalk not only helped advance his own cause Friday, but that of his sire as well.
The Florida-bred colt became the first graded stakes winner in the United States for Smarty Jones, who stands at Three Chimneys Farm.
"Smarty Jones needed a good horse and hopefully this is it," Amoss said.
Flatter Than Me, who overtook pacesetter Soundman at the head of the stretch, held gamely for second after sitting off fractions of :21.98 and :45.84, 11/2 lengths clear of third-place finisher Brassy Boy. Brassy Boy was unbeaten in two prior starts coming into the race.
"Amoss' horse finished very, very strong," said Hal Wiggins, trainer of Brassy Boy. "He's going to be the horse that comes out of this bunch, I believe."
