Marshall, who will be honored by the Thomasville Board of Education Tuesday night, was selected to be the 2009-10 Wachovia Principal of the Year by a panel of Thomasville City Schools administrators. The program is sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the Center for School Leadership Development and the Wachovia Corp.
"Mrs. Marshall has done a tremendous job at the middle school," said Keith Tobin, Thomasville City Schools superintendent. "She is a very focused leader. There is a lot of collaboration going on at the middle school, really looking at making sure that we are teaching that whole child that we talk about all the time."
Marshall, who has more than 30 years of experience in education, said being named Principal of the Year two times in a row is an honor.
"(Principal of the Year) means that I'm still making differences in childrens' lives," she said. "That's what is important to me. It means that there are families and children out there who still believe in the public school education and the success of what hard-working teachers and administrators can help their children become."
Under Marshall's leadership for the 2008-09 school year, Thomasville Middle School made Adequate Yearly Progress, also known as AYP, and ABC expected growth.
Marshall accepted her first full-time teaching job in Grand Rapids, Mich., where she was an elementary school teacher for seven years. She then spent 20 years as an educator in Guilford County Schools, where she was a teacher, assistant principal, principal and director of elementary achievement. Along the way, she won numerous Teacher of the Year awards.
In 1998, she decided to leave education to spend more time with her family.
After working jobs that were not in the education field, she decided to teach once again for Danville Public Schools in Virginia.
She was hired as an assistant principal at Thomasville Middle School in 2001 and in 2006 replaced Tobin as the middle school's principal.
