BRIEF: MedQuist workers eligible for fed assistance

Nov 07, 2009 (The Oklahoman - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- MEDQ | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Former employees of MedQuist Inc., including workers in home sites in Oklahoma, are eligible for the Trade Readjustment Assistance Program, according to a ruling by the U.S. Labor Department.

The agency found that former workers meet all requirements to receive the assistance under the Trade Act of 1974. Under the act, recipients must be laid off or threatened with layoff, employer sales or production must decrease, and increased imports of products that compete with the firm's products must contribute to the layoffs.

Access to services

Workers certified for the assistance program can access services such as income support, relocation and job search allowances, and health coverage tax credits. Those that need retraining for suitable employment may receive occupational training. The goal is to reconnect laid-off workers with suitable employment quickly, the Labor Department said.

Once certified, recipients must enroll in training, although the state can waive this requirement in certain cases.

The Labor Department report concluded that all MedQuist employees, including those working at home, who became "totally or partially separated from employment" after Aug. 26, 2008, are eligible to apply for the assistance.
