Stocks advanced strongly early in the day only to finish significantly off their highs. This was true of the Nasdaq, which still closed up more than 1%.

The Dow ended the day up 48.03. The Nasdaq Composite finished ahead 25.85. And the S&P 500 closed up 9.00.

Home Depot (HD | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) rallied for a second consecutive day, closing above its 200-day moving average for the first time in more than a year.

Waste Management Inc. (WMI | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) increased its hostile bid for Republic Services (RSG | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) to $6.73 billion, more than 8% above its previous offer.

Analysts Goldman Sachs (GS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) suggested that limited discounting by retailers should improve quarterly profits. Shares of Wal-Mart (WMT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) were dramatically higher on Monday before finishing off their highs.

Shares of Amazon.com (AMZN | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) soared more than 9% on Monday after analysts at Citigroup (C | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) doubled their sales forecast for the online retailer's Kindle Reader, a device for accessing electronic media.
