In Memoriam: Psychiatrist, Trading Coach Dr. Ari Kiev
I was looking for books on performance psychology when I learned the Dr. Ari Kiev had died last month. As TradingMarkets CEO and founder Larry Connors said when I shared the news with him, it is a great loss, especially for many of us in the trading community.
I had the privilege of interviewing this legendary psychiatrist and coach for TradingMarkets a year ago. And among all of the insightful things he shared, one statement he said near the end of our interview has stuck with me ever since:
“… it’s not as pollyannish as I’m trying to suggest. A lot of the conversations that I have with people tend to be brutally honest, because I think the task of a trading coach or a guide is to confront people, to wake them up, to throw cold water in their face to really get them to see how much they have decided to produce the results that they are producing. That the results aren’t by chance, but they are because the individual has made a decision, conscious or unconscious, to produce certain results.”
This weekend for our Big Saturday Interview – in memory of Dr. Ari Kiev and on behalf of traders, Olympic athletes and so many others whose lives were touched by the man and his work – we would like to present not one but two interviews TradingMarkets has done with Dr. Kiev this decade. The first was one conducted by TradingMarkets Stock Editor Dave Goodboy a few years ago, who sent along these remarks earlier today:
“I was saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Ari Kiev.
I interviewed Dr. Kiev back in 2005. He was one of the first subjects for my interview assignments at Trading Markets. Dr. Kiev was one of those people who was easy to relate to. Hedge fund king, Steve Cohen recognized this and Dr. Kiev’s ability to help traders early on. Dr. Kiev had the unusual ability to enrich both the highest level quant PhD and the average trader with his wisdom. He was very warm and extremely easy to talk to. His openness when it came to topics that I felt may have been a little too deep was impressive. Dr. Kiev was a true Philomath who was willing to share his knowledge for the betterment of the trading community. He will be dearly missed, but his work will live on to improve trading performance far into the future. RIP.”

We are also making available our Big Saturday Interview with Dr. Kiev. This most recent interview takes a look at the challenges of helping inspire peak performance in others, and how the methods used for world class traders and world class athletes can be used by everyday people in their own lives to help reach their goals.
