Profiting in Patterns: The Big Saturday Interview with Thomas Bulkowski

December 31, 2009 by Thomas Bulkowski

Editor’s Note: A few months ago, David Penn sat down with author and trader Thomas Bulkowski. Here’s a look back at their conversation. We hope you enjoy it.

From his Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns to his Encyclopedia of Candlestick Charts,
Thomas Bulkowski’s work has been characterized by a thorough and exhaustive testing and retesting of much of what has passed as common wisdom in technical analysis for decades. Every trader or market technician who has ever looked at a price chart knows what a head and shoulders bottom looks like. But how many know what the failure rate is for these patterns? Or the number that has typically reached their price targets?

This is the kind of information that can turn chart patterns from anecdotal observation into true trading tools. In the first part of our conversation with Thomas Bulkowski, he shares with us his background in trading, investing and technical analysis, how he came to focus on studying and quantifying chart patterns in stocks, and how traders and investors can best take advantage of his research. Part 2 of our Big Saturday Interview with Thomas Bulkowski will be published next week.

In addition to his books, Thomas Bulkowski runs The Pattern Site, which provides free charts, market analysis and pattern recognition resources for traders. Traders can also access his blog at http://thepatternsite.com/Blog.html.
