flatline for most of the morning.Â
After turning higher over the course of
the previous session, the price of oil has moved sharply lower in morning
trading on Thursday. Crude for February delivery is currently down $1.95 at
$50.29 a barrel after ending Wednesday’s trading up $1.03 a barrel.
The steep decline by the price of oil
comes after the Energy Department released a report showing a significant
increase in U.S. crude oil inventories. The report showed that crude oil
inventories rose by 6.8 million barrels in the week ended January 12.
After moving lower in early trading and
hitting a low of $631 an ounce, the price of gold turned higher and reached a
high of $637.40 an ounce. The price of gold has given back some ground since
then, and gold for February delivery is currently unchanged at $633.30 an ounce.
