Earnings Per Share

The total earnings per each outstanding share of a company’s stock.

EPS = (Net Income – Dividends on Preferred Stock) / Average Outstanding Shares.

This is one of the most important fundamental measures of a stock’s prospects for future price gains.  It is a key factor used to compute the price-to-earnings valuation ratio.
