Here Are Wednesday’s Top Stocks
The markets took a
“Q” from James Bond today, as the early headlines were classic
material, worthy of this “SPYs” support. North
Korea shooting a test missile and a “shaken, but not stirred”
Consumer Confidence number
set the stage
for an early morning drubbing. Soon thereafter, a rumor, “From Russia With
Love” (trader talk of potential disarmament conversations between Russia
and Iraq) apparently set reversal patterns out of the sinister “trap door,” and upside continuation patterns in motion.Â
By the closing bell it
was quite apparent that at least in today’s session, “DIAs are Forever.” Of course the “SPY Who Loved Me” was universally
revered and cherished by all who took the technical reversal and continuation
plays in today’s trade, but let’s not forget about our dear beloved
“Q” (QQQ). While not receiving top billing in today’s show, it
nonetheless managed to go along for the ride. Although this character was
showing a few gray hairs, it did close up on the day, while the other major
players took center stage with gains of a percentage point.
Technically the ETFs
put in a nice day. Volume was the strongest in several sessions on wide-range
bars that closed at session highs. What more could a position trader want? I’m
glad you ask, because it still looks like our friend the master “SPY”
007, is still surrounded by an enemy known as The Resistance. While today’s SPY
games were exciting and gave bulls the opportunity to get long and profit in
enemy territory, it must be reminded that today’s Russian friend, might once
again turn into a bear. It’s nice to know that as daytraders focusing on our
High and Low RS lists, we’ll be ready to profit from whatever SPY games are
played tomorrow, and not be concerned about being left out in the cold, deep
inside enemy territory.

Reversal Patterns
Stocks with 3 Month RS of 80 and / or
Institutional Favorites that are setting up on a closing basis as potential long reversal pattern
candidates. Candidates listed may have triggered on a closing basis, or close to
triggering ( my general rule is to list the pattern setup if it is within +/-.15
of trigger price). Patterns include 1,2,3s and Slim Jim (SJ) consolidations. Background
supports in the form of Fibonacci levels, EMAs (DEMA=daily ema), and former price supports are
used in the decision making process.

and Institutional Laggards
The following stocks are selected from
the Nasdaq, S&P 500 & 600 Indices, and HOLDRs. These are normally heavily traded,
liquid issues that
are exhibiting relative strength or weakness, pattern (Slim
Jims), or last hour volume surges, indicative of follow through in the very near term. Due to the
institutional participation, which can provide additional follow through not
always found in less active issues, the 3 Month RS criteria is more subjective, and quite often less stringent in
evaluating an issues near term prospects. Program trading (which affects many of these
issues) can also be viewed as a potential beneficial factor when stocks listed
below are exhibiting price pattern setups on an intraday and / or daily chart
basis.
