What are market cycles? And how can traders and investors take advantage of market cycles to make more timely and successful trades and investments?

Tim Wood is editor and publisher of Cycles News & Views (cyclesman.info). His work in cycles analysis, influenced by the cycles pioneer Walter Bressert, has helped traders and investors quantify short, intermediate and long term cyclic patterns in stocks, bonds, gold and a number of other markets. Relying on price data that in some instances extends back to the 19th century, Tim Wood has quantified the cyclic turns in the major markets, providing a market timing resource in both stocks and commodities for traders and investors alike.

In addition to his work on cycles, Tim Wood has applied his quantified approach to the work of classic Dow Theorists from Charles Dow to George Schaefer, allowing him to create statistical probabilities and expectations for market action. Using both his cycles analysis and quantified Dow Theory, for example, Tim Wood was able to warn subscribers of the 2002 bear market and, more recently, to caution traders and investors about the looming top in commodities in 2008.

In the first part of our conversation with Tim Wood, we learn what cycles are and how they work. Tim Wood also explains how he used his research in cycles to develop an indicator that has helped him ignore the noise of everyday market fluctuations and focus on statistical probabilities and reasonable expectations. Part 2 of our interview, to be published next week, will focus on his research into Dow Theory.
