A Somnambulist’s Delight!

Sleepwalking is a sleep disorder affecting
an estimated 10% of all humans at least once in their lives. This
malady is also known as somnambulism.
It is a dissociative mental state in which the individual rises from sleep
with little awareness of surroundings to perform what appear to be conscious
motor activities. Sleepwalkers commonly perform actions, such as looking for
lost objects, that reflect stressful incidents from waking life.

Today’s testimony by the Maestro (at least that’s how Bob Woodward and
perhaps Andrea Mitchell refer to him, the rest of us call him Fed Chairman
Alan Greenspan) seemed to be a somnambulist’s delight. I watched and
listened to Chairman Greenspan and found his testimony to the Senate Banking
Committee to be interesting for about the first 90 minutes and then
lapsing into the usual boring game of Senators trying to outfox the Fox.

The good news about the Chairman’s comments was that he said little to knock
the market from its recent rally highs. The bad news was that he said the
market is nowhere near as bad as it got back in 1998 during the emerging
market collapse and Russian fiasco. Given that the market ran to 11,000 yet
again and failed, yet again, our feeling is that the lack of boost by Mr.
Greenspan may cause the bears to take the driver’s seat once again.
