I recently had the misfortune of visiting a health care
unit for people with Alzheimer’s Disease.

As I walked the unit, I was struck less by the expected memory deficits
of the patients than by the essential randomness of their behavior.
The term that is commonly used for this behavior is “agitation”, but
that suggests an anxiety that isn’t necessarily there.
Rather, as the disease deteriorates the brain’s frontal cortex—
