TradingMarkets Mid-Day Movers
After moving modestly higher at the start
of trading on Thursday, the U.S. stock markets have continued higher throughout
much of the session. The major averages have shown strong upward moves, moving
firmly into positive territory.
The markets are benefiting from
significant strength among resource stocks, with energy stocks posting
particularly strong gains after falling sharply in recent sessions. The gains by
energy stocks come as a substantial turnaround by the price of oil has inspired
some bargain hunting.
The price of gold has shown a lack of
direction during trading on Thursday, as traders digest some volatility being
shown by the price of oil. Gold for February delivery is currently up $1.90 at
$615.30 an ounce.
The choppy trading comes as the price of
oil has staged a significant turnaround after seeing substantial weakness in
early trading. Crude for February delivery is currently up $0.08 at $54.10 a
barrel after hitting a low of $52.94 a barrel.
From a quick glance at our new
PowerRatings
Heat Maps*,
we are seeing Energy as the sector with the most anticipated strength. The
overall picture however is looking rather weak with the weakest sectors being in
Drugs, Electronics, and Consumer Non-Durables.
