Wednesday’s Stock Watch
The broader
markets closed mixed on the heels of the Federal Reserve’s
announcement of a 25-basis-point rate cut. Overall, volume was average, marking
distribution on the Dow and S&P 500, and accumulation on the Nasdaq. Market
breadth was mixed, with NYSE declining issues and volume having a slight edge
over upward indicators; and Nasdaq advancing volume commanding a 2:1
dominance to declining volume, with advancing issues slightly over declining
issues. Overall, our watch list was mixed, though there were some nice gains
made on the “Recent Breakout” list.

PowerRating) was recently added to our “Building a Base” list
for being in an ascending base. The stock was our worst performer on the day
with a loss of 5.46% on slightly below-average volume. With the ascending base
formation, we watch for a breakout above the upper trendline on heavy volume.
Unfortunately, this stock is currently challenging its lower trendline, which, if
violated, would remove it from our list. With an RS of 99 and last-quarter
earnings 999% greater than the previous year’s, this easily met our
qualifications for a potential winner.
Recent Breakouts
We monitor the action of Recent Breakouts as an indicator
of the market health for IT traders. When breakouts are acting well, this is a
good sign for the likelihood of further sustainable breakouts. When breakouts
are failing, IT traders should be even more cautious.
