Better-than-expected earnings from Citigroup and United Technologies, in-line
earnings from General Electric, plus a jobless claims report at the lowest level
since July, powered the indexes higher. The Philadelphia Fed coming in at the
highest level since August 2000 also put a positive spin on the equity markets.

The Dow rose 137.77 to 985.04; the Nasdaq gained 2%, up 41.38 1985.82; the
S&P 500 rose 11.32 to 1138.88.
